"Immediatamente a sud della basilica civile e del decumano che l’affianca sono emersi i resti di un imponente cinta di fortificazione, costituita da una sequenza di bastioni triangolari dal caratteristico ***andamento a linea spezzata***. Questa nuova linea difensiva, raggiungibile verso ovest da una strada interpoderale, sanciva di fatto l’abbandono di tutta la parte settentrionale della città romana, a cominciare dal foro, e si arroccava invece a difesa dell’abitato sviluppatosi intorno al complesso basilicale.

A est, le mura si raccordavano al precedente circuito murario di età tardoantica, mentre in corrispondenza dell’asse viario principale nord‐sud di Aquileia romana si apriva una porta urbica. Questa nuova cinta, con l’antemurale rettilineo che la precede e che si sovrappone in parte alle rovine della basilica civile, è stata recentemente assegnata al VI secolo, dopo la guerra greco‐gotica (535‐553 d.C.) e la riconquista bizantina."
