Angolban soha nem használják ilyen értelemben a "merit" szót a nekrológban. A "merit" az a kitüntetés, érdem, amit valaki élete folyamán kapott. Mint itt is:
"For his merits he was honored with several awards. As a brilliant surgeon, ..."

Az obituaryban az érdemek így kerülnek megfogalmazásra:
"An obituary is a way for the living to reflect on the attributes, contributions and achievements of someone recently departed."

A személy érdemeit ezekkel a szavakkal szokás kifejezni: attributes, contributions, achievements, - ha a listát ki akarjuk bővíteni, akkor: qualities, accomplishments, magnum opus, stb.

Nem hiszem, hogy a szavak pontos lefordítása lenne a cél, hanem a bennük rejlő gondolatok és érzelmek megfelelő visszatükrözése.
