Hungarian term or phrase: 'azon barátait'...
Is this expression "azon barátait" considered correct or incorrect? Is it acceptable in formal writing, or only informal writing? What exactly does 'azon' mean in this sentence? Thank you very much!

Tamás felhívta azon barátait, akikkel régen nem találkozott.

those friends of his
Explanation:
Ezt szép magyarsággal mondják - választékos beszédmód.

Valószínűleg túl fiatal vagy ahhoz, hogy gyakorta (ez is a gyakran választékos formája) hallottad volna

Explanation:
I am not sure whether you need the English translation or just wanted an explanation.
This is correct Hungarian, you could rephrase it this way:

"Tamás felhívta azokat a barátait, akikkel régen nem találkozott."

Perhaps this version sounds more familiar to you.
The meaning is that Tamas called those friends of his (and not the others) that he hasn't seen in a long time.

If the sentence was:
"Tamás felhívta barátait, akikkel régen nem találkozott." (without "azon") that would mean "Tamas called his friends that he hasn't seen in a long time". The difference is that this latter version suggests that he has not seen his friends (e.g. in general, he has not seen any of his friends). The original sentence with "azon" suggests that he may have seen some of his friends, but there are some friends that he has not seen in a while, and he is calling specifically those friends.
I hope you get the idea.
