The soft metal conforms to the surface of the tubing and the fitting, and creates a seal. Compression fittings are advantageous in many cases because they are easy to make using basic tools. Compression fitting consists of a brass union with brass coupling nuts at the outlets. A softer copper or brass ‘olive’ ring fits between each coupling nut and the union. As the coupling nut is tightened using a spanner or wrench the olive is compressed tightly against the pipe creating a watertight seal.
