Criticó a la llamada cultura industrial y fue contrario a las tendencias idealistas e historicista en boga en el mundo académico durante su época, en contraposición elaboró una teorización historiográfica a la cual llamó Kulturgeschichte («Historia de la cultura», aunque el término Kultur en alemán y en el contexto de la época indica principalmente la «civilización»).

También son interesantísimos los estudios de Norbert Elias sobre la diferenciación entre civilización y cultura.
