No sé si aún estoy a tiempo: el Wahrig Deutsches Wörterbuch explica la expresión de esta forma:
"den moralischen Halt verlieren, moralisch sinken, in üble Gesellschaft geraten". Estoy de acuerdo con Marcelo que "böse", en esta expresión, es un aumentativo haciendo todo más dramático, más intenso.
