Ein Definitionsvorschlag wurde im Oktober 2010 von dem International Council of Chemical
Associations (ICCA) veröffentlicht [ICCA 2010]. Dieser Vorschlag lehnt sich an den Standard
des ISO Technical Committees 229 „Nanotechnologies“ an. Die ICCA-Definition erfasst
aber einschränkend nur gezielt hergestellte Nanomaterialien aus entweder mindestens
10 Gew.-% Nanoobjekten oder 50 Gew.-% Aggregaten/Agglomeraten dieser Nanoobjekte.
Ein Vergleich von insgesamt 13 rechtlich verbindlichen Definitionen und Definitionsvorschlägen
wurde im Juni 2010 vom Joint Research Center (JRC) der Europäischen Kommission
erstellt [JRC 2010].
