Der Chef vom Dienst, häufig CvD abgekürzt, ist in einer Redaktion als Bindeglied zwischen Redakteuren und Produktion zuständig für die technisch und terminlich korrekte Anlieferung der zu druckenden Texte bzw. des zu sendenden Materials beim Rundfunk. Zwangsläufig steht er in ständigem Kontakt mit der verantwortlichen Chefredaktion und den Redakteuren. Er ist bei Printmedien darüberhinaus verantwortlich für die Erstellung der Heftstruktur. Jedoch ist er weder für optische oder inhaltliche Qualität noch presserechtlich verantwortlich - dies ist Sache des verantwortlichen Chefredakteurs.

Häufig handelt es sich beim CvD um einen stellvertretenden Chefredakteur.
