Konstruktivisten beschreiben in Anlehnung an die chilenischen Biologen und Neurophysiologen VARELA und MATURANA das Nervensystem als autopoietisches (sich selbst erzeugendes) System. Ein autopoietisches System ist strukturell mit seiner Umwelt gekoppelt bleibt ihr gegenüber aber autonom. Es reagiert auf Impulse von außen (Perturbationen) operational geschlossen und selbstreferenziell, d.h. nach eigenen in seiner Struktur festgelegten Gesetzen.
