Qualche suggerimento su come rendere questa espressione?

Grazie a tutte per i vostri contributi. Alla fine ho usato una formulazione per così dire neutrale perché non si trattava di un personaggio eccentrico, un cane sciolto o quant'altro, ma di un poveraccio che ha avuto tante disavventure e che ora ha ripreso in mano la propria vita. Buona giornata a tutte.
