Explanation:
bin zwar keine ital. Muttersprachlerin, habe aber diesen Ausdruck für "große Augen machen". Vielleicht kannst du das ja auch im Italienischen mit dieser Redewendung auflösen, denn auch das Deutsche ist ja kein üblicher Ausdruck ...

Metterei: spalancai le orecchie (suona meglio di "le mie orecchie si spalancarono"), poiché in italiano non si riesce a giocare sui due elementi occhi/orecchi. Gli occhi esprimono la meraviglia, gli orecchi direi più lo stato di attenzione, ma in entrambi i casi si tratta di "allargare" (sgranare) gli occhi e gli orecchi.
