HISTOIRE
Depuis la préhistoire, l'homme a puisé dans la nature les substances nécessaires à la réalisation de ses oeuvres d'art.

Les premières matières colorantes étaient d'origine végétale (indigo, garance) ou animale (cochenille).

Sir William Perkin invente le premier colorant synthétique : la mauvéine, obtenue (dès 1858) par oxydation de l'aniline par l'acide chromique

C'est le premier de la série des colorants à l'aniline.

En 1859, Johann Peter Griess découvre la réaction de diazotation, puis la réaction de couplage des diazoïques, par laquelle on produit à l'heure actuelle une grande partie des colorants synthétiques.
Actuellement, il y a près de 6 000 colorants différents, à majorité synthétiques.
