neutral  Armorel Young: but what would a ribbon sweater actually be? - this sounds like a literal translation from a translator who didn't know any better

agree  Trudy Peters: Makes sense to me. They may use ribbons instead of yarn to knit the sweater.

Bändchenpullover
ribbon yarn sweater?

Explanation:
Another possibility is ribbon YARN sweater. To me, a ribbon sweater sounds like something with ribbons hanging off it, literally. Maybe the distinction is not so important.

I think a Bändchenpullover could be a Pullover made from BändchenGARN. According to http://www.b-treude.de/fashionlexikon.htm
Bändchengarn: Strickgarn aus dünnen Bändchen. Diese können gestrickt und flachgebügelt, aber auch gewebt sein.

This page, entitled baendchen.html, calls them "ribbon yarns":

Finally, the phrase "ribbon yarn sweater" seems to be pretty common, see e.g.
