traditional guild 'insignia' in Germany Explanation: Die Ehrbarkeit. Ref 1 I guess you'll have to transcribe, as it's unlikely that there is a corresponding English term (it has something to do with honorableness). You'll find plenty of examples & descriptions if you search for 'ehrbarkeit + zunft'. Reference: http://www.zimmerin.de/zihi/zuenftiges/kluft/index.shtml |

A tie/scarf indicating membership of a guild Explanation: Sorry, I can't come up with a proper term, but the definition I found is crochet tie, "Zunftkrawatte aus Häkelband", if that fits your context. HTH Reference: http://www.eiko.de/liste.php3?k=20 |

Ehrbarkeit Explanation: Henry, You might have to leave this one as "Ehrbarkeit" and add a translator's note. I don't know of any similar tradition (in the UK at least). I think it is a thin, black tie with a pin to indicate the particular guild the wearer belongs to and is worn by a "journeyman" or tradesman on his traditional journey of 3 years and 1 day. I remember reading somewhere that they even have/had to wear it when they are sleeping! |
