German term or phrase: Verlaufseinheit
My text is about psychotic depression. It is looking, in particular, at the phenomenological approach to treating this condition andexamines the history of psychiatry in this regard. I do not know how to translate Verlaufseinheit in the following sentence:
In der Folge sind es vor allem phänomenologisch orientierte Psychiater, die den Melancholiebegriff als eigene, monopolare Verlaufseinheit aufnehmen und synonym mit endogener Depression oder depressiver Psychose verwenden

Explanation:
This sentence appears purely descriptive to me, and Verlaufseinheit looks like a true chimaera that must be level with Melancholiebegriff.

An appropriate starting point is a phenomenological description of the geometric distributions or flow patterns that are observed in common multiphase flows. This chapter describes the flow patterns observed in horizontal and vertical pipes and identifies a number of the instabilities that lead to transition from one flow pattern to another...
A particular type of geometric distribution of the components is called a flow pattern or flow regime and many of the names given to these flow patterns (such as annular flow or bubbly flow) are now quite standard. Usually the flow patterns are recognized by visual inspection, though other means such as analysis of the spectral content of the unsteady pressures or the fluctuations in the volume fraction have been devised for those circumstances in which visual information is difficult to obtain

At this juncture the evidence bearing on the dysfunction between the endogenous forms of depression (or ‘melancholia’ or autonomous depression) on the one hand and neurotic forms of depression on the other requires consideration. In DSM-III-R, depressive and anxiety disorders are classified as distinct categorical entities.

Melancholia can be identified as a separate mood disorder with unique psychopathology and psychoneuroendocrinology, worthy of separate attention in the classification systems. We therefore suggest that melancholia be positioned as a distinct, identifiable mood disorder that requires specific treatment.

The purpose of this article is to provide an overview of existing systems for the diagnosis of the endogenous (melancholic) subtype of major depression...
The available evidence suggests some clinical utility and some (albeit not entirely consistent) validity for the concept of melancholic features. Consequently, DSM-IV will retain the designation "with melancholic features," return to the shorter DSM-III feature listing, and broaden the designation by requiring either unreactive mood or pervasive anhedonia but not both. Further research on this subgroup is indicated.

agree  Anne Schulz: Yes, Kraepelin's sub-classification of what was previously considered globally as "insanity" is the basis of this term: a "disease entity" distinguished by virtue of its course. I am not sure if there is an established English translation, probably not.

-> Thanks very much for your peer comment, Anne! Any equivalent term in English would more probably than not have been simply transliterated.
