My partial draft: "It made me more aware of how often one operates on autopilot or [...?], so that I try harder to be in the here and now, and to make my tasks conscious and/or to be more accepting of my own emotions."

Thanks! I liked some of the other answers too, esp. ortholingo's, but it was Thomas who set me straight first on the fact that I was using the wrong meaning of "gleich" and therefore confusing myself.
