The reason why this all sounds so "technical" is that the dvct was trying to develop standards for coaching:
"Kompetenzen im Sinne des dvct sind Zuschreibungen an die Funktion Coach. Der Coach in diesem Sinne handelt geistig und emotional selbstorganisiert und zeigt in seinen beobachtbaren Verhaltensweisen bestimmte, grundlegende Einstellungen, die den Anforderungen des dvct e.V. entsprechen (siehe auch 5 Kompetenzbereiche)."

Here's the "Trainer" version from the dvct:

"Im engeren Sinne kann er sich selbst in seiner Tätigkeit als Trainer einschätzen und hat in diesem Rahmen Werthaltungen entwickelt, eigene Begabungen und Motive identifiziert und einen Leistungsvorsatz im Sinne seiner TeilnehmerInnen und seines Auftraggebers entfaltet."

This one omits "als Trainer" at the end of the sentence.

Sadly, I can't seem to pinpoint the exact meaning of "im Sinne von," although I think it hovers between "benefit" and Ramey's "needs of the client" - if these aren't just two sides of the same coin.

First, someone else's explanation attempt:

The first sentence could be of help; the second conveniently omits the part we're looking for. Outnumbered 3 to 1, I'll use "she" for "coach" in my explanation:
"[...] kann er sich selbst in seiner Tätigkeit einschätzen"
- OK, she knows what she's doing.

"und hat in diesem Rahmen
- The crucial part in bold. Everything that follows refers to "Rahmen"="durch Selbsteinschätzung" [self-assessment]

- Werthaltungen entwickelt
She has developed a set of values.
- eigene Begabungen und Motive identifiziert
She has identified what her talents/skills and motivations are.
- einen Leistungsvorsatz [...] als Coach entfaltet
She has tapped her potential and set a benchmark [...]

After revisiting the issue, I think there are two ways to express the idea. Take a look again at the last paragraph using "im Sinne":
"Im Sinne des dvct bedeutet das, dass ein Coach im thematischen Kontext des Klienten über grundlegendes Orientierungswissen verfügt und es im Sinne seines Klienten anwendet."

1) "im Sinne des dvct"
- in regard to / from the perspective of [the] dvct
2) "im Sinne des Klienten anwenden"
-> use this knowledge to the client's benefit

On to your question:
"einen Leistungsvorsatz im Sinne seines Klienten"
- I have a gut feeling this refers to option 2, as far-fetched as it may sound. I'll explain in section C.

RE: your latest post
I don't believe you're the only one having a hard time here. Frankly, I'm no fan of this method, especially if the result seems like a random combination.

A hard-and-fast rule:
If it's not established terminology, there typically is no deep-seated meaning. Just tear the compound apart and reverse the word order.

It's a bit like British headlines. Example from Michael Swan's book:
FURNITURE FACTORY PAY CUT ROW
-> row about a cut in pay at a factory that makes furniture

Seeschifffahrt
-> Fahrt von Schiffen auf See

I know! The problem is that when you put two words together like that (and they're never in Duden that way), all Germans seem to know what they mean, but foreigners (at least this foreigner) are left scratching their heads!

The authors revel in the use of the word "Leistungsvorsatz." You won't find a better way to pin down the meaning.

Is a bit like "Die guten Vorsätze zum Neujahr": New Year's resolutions. Instead of -vorsatz, you could also say -ziel or -vorgabe...like milestone, benchmark, or even performance goal.

It says "fest Absicht; fester Entschluss." In your context, it should mean: Der feste Entschluss, eine bestimmte Leistung zu erbringen.

Corroborated by another usage example found online:
"Immer auch mit einem Leistungsvorsatz: Er wollte – wo das messbar war – eine halb so gute Leistung vollbringen wie der Olympiasieger von 2012."

Sorry I couldn't get to it sooner today. I'll put the revised version up in a little while. This kept me occupied, believe it! I'd wake up at night thinking, "entfaltet...entfaltet...im Sinne des...vorsatz...entfaltet."

I rather not comment on the style of the original. Anne may agree with me after she reads another paragraph from the same article (found it online):
"Ein Coach verfügt über Fähigkeiten, in der Bearbeitung von Veränderungsthemen des Klienten geistig und physisch selbstorganisiert zu handeln, d.h. er kann mit seinen fachlichen, methodischen und instrumentellen Kenntnissen, Fertigkeiten und Fähigkeiten kreativ Veränderung auslösen und begleiten."

The easily understandable part comes after "d.h." Unfortunately, there is no such thing regarding the first example. But "in der Bearbeitung von Veränderungsthemen des Klienten" may help.

Shall I call the lady who has it on her web page, and ask her what she intended to convey with this phrase? She lives in my region, it seems ;-) <br />Jokes aside – I am a German native, I consider myself to be reasonably good at reading other people's knots and windings, but this phrase, for me, could have any of the suggested meanings, plus something like "has developed a commitment to performance as a coach in much the same way as he/she will coach his/her clients to be committed to performance, viz, reaching their goals." Not sure if there is any way to decide between these options.
