I finally get what you guys are saying in different ways - that interacting with people who are at one's same level of development does not offer further stimulation. I guess the reason it made/makes no sense to me is that I don't think it's true. It is also not stated in the part of the source reference (Lasker paper) that I have available to me.

as opposed to an ideological variable - how they view each other instead of how they view themselves - sorry if I'm over-explaining.
As the variable has a greater effect by l(ong-year) married couples, it seemsto me they are talking about a 'comfort zone'. The sociological variable is that where the people of similar development feel comfortable with one another and there is no longer the incitement to change or grow.

Here is how I translated those parts:

"The findings show that being at a simultaneous ego development stage is also a 'sociological' variable: Mutual choices appeared most often between people who were within half an ego development stage of each other (p < 0.05)."

What it means is that people at the same stage of ego development (en route to maturity) or not more than half a stage apart from each other are more likely to choose one another as friends ("gegenseitige Wahlen").

Don't know what he means by "a sociological variable," but that's not important.
I know that "mutual choices" is correct, because I have part of the English-language paper that's being referenced (Lasker, 1978 -- dissertation not available online).

The reference to married cuoples, makes me think of stimuli, but it could also refer to the sense of satisfaction, of coming home.
