In my opinion, “slighted” suggests roughly the same degree of culpability on the part of others as “gekränkt” does: very little to be precise.

Compare with source below:
"That is, when a patient feels slighted and hurt, it is important to understand how and why this came about. But in the moment, the slight simply feels true..."

Hi Ramey,
Not sure it’s particularly relevant whether there was any intent behind a given slight since the focus is squarely on perceptions in this context (perceptions of the children, that is). I agree, in the active voice, the general verb “to slight s.o.” suggests more intent than “j-dn kränken” does. Still, that nuance falls by the wayside in the passive voice where, IMO, there’s no substantial difference between “He felt easily slighted and “er war schnell/leicht gekränkt.” “Offended” is also good but tends to be overused in general which lessens its impact.

I would discount “emotional hypersensitivity,” though, because that merely suggests that a person is emotionally overwhelmed by external stimuli without saying what exactly the emotional response consists of: (Kränkbarkeit = permanent state of feeling slighted)

neutral  Ramey Rieger (X): Hi Michael, even your reference sentence infers that there could be some intent behind the slight, which doesn't detract from its emotional impact. If you insist, then 'easily offended' would indicate less intent on the part of the would-be offender.

quick to take offence, touchy, thin-skinned

Explanation:
"Quick to take offence" might help circumvent the question of culpability and put the focus back on the child's perception.
A more colloquial option might be "touchiness" or "thin skin"

Example sentence(s):
  • Almost any parent with an ADD child, or any adult living with an ADD spouse, will have noticed in the ADD person a touchiness, a "thin skin."
  • Gabor Mate, M.D., Scattered Minds p. 59.
