Medical - Psychology / trial of the herbal medicine
German term or phrase: das Ich
For more background on the trial see my previous question:
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/german_to_english/medical_general/...

The report deals with the effects of the herbal preparation on the participants in the trial. Here a few examples:
"Agnus castus beschreibt in dieser Verreibung einen Zustand, in dem sich *das Ich* davor drückt, ein unlösbaren Konflikt zwischen Moral und anderen Ansprüchen auszuleben"
"Heilung dieses Zustandes ist die Bereitschaft, im Sinn der Moral etwas Falsches zu tun, dass sich dabei doch für *das Ich* als richtig erweisen könnte"

So far have found "ego/id/oneself", but am not sure of the tone required for a homoeopathic medicine context.
TIA for your help.

agree  philgoddard: Yes, the immediate context is psychology, not homeopathy. http://dict.leo.org/#/search=ich&searchLoc=0&resultOrder=bas...

disagree  Ramey Rieger (X): There is absolutely no need to get offensive. These are two different schools of thought and two different approaches to healing. Unfortunately, the concept that one is psychobabble and the other correct is simply absurd. But not uncommon.

-> You are so fundamentally wrong. German has a word for the Self as so complicatedly described by Heinz Kohut and the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute. Many of my professors and immediate supervisors were Freud and Kohut scholars. Your psychobabble is wrong

the (higher) Self

Explanation:
I beg to differ, as the ego is a Freudian term and hereby, the Self is the stronger/better/greater guide toward healing. The ego is more often the perpetrator of woes due to it's undeveloped emotional/spiritual intelligence/growth. The Self or soul guides us to our own personal reality/morality, morality quite often being the weapon wielded to instill guilt and conditioning us not to listen to the Self. The ego creates the survival mechanisms to protect us, but they must/should/can essentially, as we grow older, be discarded in order to find true healing or unification of body, mind, emotion and spirit.

disagree  Donald Jacobson: I practiced Self and Depth Psychological Therapy for 30 years. Your concepts and mine have been and will be disputed for many years to come. The ego is still the correct translation unless the self is used, but what is a higher self in practice?

-> That which guides you beyond ego.

neutral  philgoddard: This is an alternative to Donald's answer, but you should not have disagreed with his.

-> But Phil, it is not an alternative to 'ego' but something altogether different.

agree  billcorno (X): I can't think how homeopathy would use or include psychology in its methods.
