German term or phrase: ich-erleben
This is from a list under psychiatric findings and simply says:
Wahrnehmung, Ich-Erleben: kein Anhalt fuer hoehergradige Defizite.

I assume it's similar to 'Wahrnehmung' but don't understand the differentiation. Thank you for your help!!

"I" function or sense of self
Explanation:
Schizophrenia can be thought of in terms of altering one's "sense of self"(1). What is a "sense of self?" A "sense of self" is an awareness of one's physical body and mental state. It encompasses one's personality, perceptions, and emotions. It also reflects one's conscious decisions and actions. I believe that to have a "sense of self" is to combine one's inside awareness with one's outside awareness. Inside everyone's nervous system lies the "I-Function." This is the experience of I or the self in the brain. The I-Function includes more or less of the nervous system depending on how much is connected and functioning properly. It is having a sense of the self-experiencing. Everyone possesses it and uses it to determine what belongs to them.

Patients who are afflicted with Tourette's syndrome can only describe their symptoms by using terms associated with the "I" function, the consciousness of self and relation to one's environment, and many of their symptoms are associated with or affect the function of their self. This can imply that what ever is causing the symptoms of Tourette's is subsequently affecting the part of the nervous system that controls the self and the "I" function.

Ich-Erleben
sense of self

Explanation:
That is the non-technical meaning; I'm not sure if it works technically as well. Or in a more Freudian context, ego. See the references.

This is from the Pschyrembel psych dictionary (I didn't check it earlier because I didn't think it would be there, but it is): "(engl.) self-experience. Erleben innerseelicher Vorgänge als dem eigenen Ich zugehörig, ohne dass darüber explizit reflectiert wird; vgl. Ich-Störung."

agree  Horst Huber (X): What the technical readings miss, is that Erleben happens in time and "sense" may not convey that. "Phenomenology" is the discipline for that.

-> Thank you, Horst. Maybe Pschyrembel's "self-experience" is better.

agree  Johanna Timm, PhD: would definitely be my choice here, as it is a neutral (not specifically Freudian) term

self awareness

Explanation:
The difference is that one is conscious of one's environment and onself therein.

Awareness vs.self awareness
For two different terms, try: cognition, self-awareness
