"the manual" 10:38 Aug 6, 2010
I should add that this is the first mention of "the manual," at the end of a 5,000-word document, which is a description of clinical trials. A similar usage from a different document I translated: "Das folgende Fallbeispiel stellt einen möglichen Therapieverlauf der [type of therapy] gemäß Manual dar."--also with no previous mention of any manual.
In English psych parlance, I am not familiar with that kind of usage of the word "manual." It is unclear to me whether it is meant literally (i.e., they are sitting there doing the tests with a sort of "user's manual" by their sides), or more a figure of speech, as in the English "textbook case of" or "by the book."
