German term or phrase: Heilpraktikerschein
This seems to be some sort of physician's authorization to practice psychotherapy, but I'm not sure and can't find it. Thanks for any help!

Explanation:
The term “complementary health care” covers various so-called ‘alternative’ or holistic (non-allopathic) treatment options including acupuncture, homeopathy, Reiki etc.

My suggestion:
complementary health care practitioner certificate or
qualification as complementary health care practitioner

Background info:

Prior to the implementation of the Psychotherapeutengesetz in 1999 [Gesetz über die Berufe des Psychologischen Psychotherapeuten und des Kinder- und Jugendlichenpsychotherapeuten – PsychThG] psychotherapists were not recognized as fully qualified medical practitioners
cp:

Now, I'm in a dilemma, because ALL those who answered were helpful, especially Johanna and Kim who provided such useful references (and especially Kim's reference to the BDP website in English, which for some reason I had tried to find and failed). And Alison's translation would have worked in my context, since the context makes it clear what sort of certification is required. In the end, I went with the majority, especially since there is nothing really "alternative" here, it's just psychotherapy in general (some of which may be alternative). Many thanks to you all.

certified as an alternative practitioner for psychotherapy

Explanation:
I think this would work better than alternative practitioner for psychotherapy certificate. Instead of "must have a ... certificate" you could write "must be certified as an alternative practitioner...."

The Heilpraktikergesetz (HPG), which regulates the practice of alternative non-medical treatments, also allows practitioners who hold a limited license to work in the field of psychotherapy to practise psychotherapy.
However, alternative non-medical practitioners who are licensed under HPG regulations are not allowed to use the professional title of "psychotherapist". They have to charge private fees and cannot pass on their fees to the statutory insurance funds.

Psychotherapy practised by 'alternative practitioners'. Refer to HPG (Heilpraktikergesetz) and state implementation regulations and questions 27 and 28).

practitioner's licence, or licence to practise

Explanation:
The licence is required to ensure that only qualified psychotherapists are registered to practise.

agree  Helen Shiner: This is correct - it need not be psychology; it is more of a blanket certification covering complementary/alternative therapies.
