German term or phrase: frühgestört
Context is an article on the treatment of patients (post traumatic stress disorder) using horses.

"In der Psychotherapie neurotisch erkrankter und ***frühgestörter*** Kinder und Erwachsener ermöglicht das basale, körperliche Erleben mit dem Pferd nachweislich heilende Selbst- und Beziehungserfahrungen."

My draft is:
"It has been demonstrated in the psychotherapy of neurotically diseased and ***frühgestörte***children and adults that basal, physical experience with horses contributes to curative experiences of self-awareness and relationships."

Is there an English equivalent for ***frühgestört*** or do we need to paraphrase it?

Thanks for your comments.

early-disturbed children

Explanation:

"...In that context the importance of relationship as an equivalence to the "primary motherliness" for early-disturbed children will be stressed..."

There are a few scientific references, e.g.:

disagree  Susan Welsh: This does not sound like English. (Not everybody at NIH.gov is a native speaker of English. Addition: I see that this ref is a translation of a precis of a German article, so it is not a very reliable authority.)

-> Correct, Susan - but no other suggestion came up with a scientific reference so far!!!!...and still didn't ;-)

neutral  Harald Moelzer (medical-translator): ...not a single reference for "early onset neurotic impairment"//Do you mean, I should google for the references that you do not provide???

-> Would you agree that Google is not the last word in everything,Harald? In this particular case, googling for "early onset" + "neurotic" will give many related references, though not precisely the phrase "early onset neur.impairment".Tks and warm wishes2U:-)

agree  Susan Welsh: Also, agree with Sylvie. Plus: Look again at literal translation of "basal." It sounds very peculiar here. Basal can also mean simply "basic" or "fundamental."

disturbed at an early age

Explanation:
I cannot see a better way round this than wording the opening of the sentence:
"The psychotherapy of children and adults neurotically disturbed at an early age...(is made possible by...)"
or something similar.

childhood-onset psychological disorder

Explanation:

"Childhood-onset" seems to be the established scientific ( I used "Google scholar")term:

Kudoz to Chetan for the "onset" :-)!
