I suppose that the author could have used 'Konflikt(e)' if he/she were so minded: after all, it comes in at 30 kilogoogles.
Perhaps he/she was not familiar with 'Dichotomie/dichotomy'? (By contrast with the English at 189 ggl, "innere Dichotomie" scores a paltry 2ggl!)
