spare time prose Explanation: This is just to complement what has been proposed already. The paraphrase might go along these lines: From spare time poetry to the book as a friend. From spare time prose to the letter as a friend. From spare time prose to writing as a friend. From spare time prose to writing as (to) a friend. The German title and further description makes me think of epistolary novels such as "Die Leiden des jungen Werther" or "Pamela" (and, possibly, its most popular parody "Shamela"), etc. The idea is that (literary) writing necessarily entails a reflection of the writer's self, especially with the rise of the novel. Although "Poesie" literally translates to "poetry", the distinction of literary genres is not as strict as in German. In English, "prose" virtually covers any form of (literary) writing, which could be meant here, rather than just "poems". |
