I'm struggling with the first sentence. Can anyone help?

nothing wrong with 'definition' but we often say this and it's perhaps closer to 'Begriff'

Explanation:
I don't think "extended" or "expanded" really work in English. "Is based on" is a bit trite, and might be better done without. But it rather depends on the level of pretentiousness you are aiming at (which should be as close as possible to the level of pretentiousness of the original). So, perhaps, "A broader concept of literature underlies [or even undergirds] the work", although not very good, might be OK if you wanted to be just a little bit over the top with your intellectual pretensions....
