Law/Patents - Patents
German term or phrase: Unterpatent
"Der Wertansatz von EUR XXX Mio. für einzelne übernommene XXXXXXXX-Unterpatente fußt auf den für die nicht übertragenen Lizenzrechte angewandten Bewertungsgrundlagen mit der Ausnahme, dass der Kapitalwert unter Zugrundelegung der Methode der Lizenzpreisanalogie indirekt in Form eines ersparten Lizenzaufwands ermittelt wurde."
The German word appears not to exist, except in the sense that all new German words don't exist until someone uses them.
Guessing in English doesn't help much either: 'subpatent' appears to refer to not-so-evident forms of malaria; 'secondary' or 'second-tier' seems to refer to a separate, less 'difficult' patenting system for innovations.
So we all know what the guy means, but how do we say it in English?

thanks again, Edith: I'm convinced this is the right answer.
My query to the client elicited this answer: "in dem vorliegenden Bewertungsgutachten von Ernst & Young wird von 'subpatents of the XXXXXX patent family' gesprochen. In der Anlagenbuchhaltung der Gesellschaft wird dies mit „Unterpatente“ übersetzt."
