Though "taper" is commonly used as "becoming less" (deriving from OE tapur - wax candle) , it tends to be in the meaning of "diminish or reduce in thickness towards one end", weakening light to my mind is "fading"

Since I have to turn this in tonight, I'm going to go ahead with your very good answer. Fading does indeed sound good in this context; I initially thought "tapering" because there's a graphic illustration associated with this part of the description.
