In a legal document about the patent, they may be "claims for which protection is sought".

@Elizabeth: Claims are, in a patent document, by definition the statements in a patent for which protection is sought. Adding 'patent' or 'protection' is extraneous and not concise, and as conciseness of phrasing is a requirment for patents, extraneous wording should be avoided like the plague.

Abfassung der Schutzansrpüche would be the legaly specified formulation of the claims, which causes difficulty for inexperienced applicants.

Asker: So, there is no need to include "patent" or "protection" in the expression? Would you say "phrasing of the claims" for "Abfassung der Schutzrechte"? Somehow this sentence is really nagging at me :-(
