German term or phrase: Applikaturen
"Der Notentext selbst wird aufgrund einer genauen Überprüfung aller Quellen durch renommierte Musikwissenschaftler erstellt. Namhafte Musiker und Pädagogen steuern Fingersätze und Applikaturen bei."

"Eine Urtext-Ausgabe enthält als Ausgabe für die Spielpraxis sparsame Fingersätze und Applikaturen, die richtungsweisende Hilfestellungen an heiklen Stellen geben sollen."

Cécile thought it would mean performance indications (dynamics and stuff), while Google seems to suggest that it means fingerings, perhaps with a tendency to saxophones and such. But this is for a classical music publisher dealing mainly in keyboards, strings, flute and clarinet.

As a keyboard player, I am of course familiar with "Fingersätze" as meaning fingerings in that context.

Explanation:
according to my knowledge and all checks on the net, Applikatur and Fingersatz are normally used interchangeably. The only different usage I found is "Fingersatz" as "fingering" and "Applikatur" as "position" (on string instruments). But this meaning was only found in one context:

SCHOEN,M. Lehrgang für den Violin-Unterricht Op.38:XI (Nowotny). Applikaturen (4-7 Position). UE 1811. 20s. 75
http://www.svaf.se/enhorning/Viskol.htm

Since there really is no difference between the two terms and "Fingersatz" for string instruments tells you only the fingers to use and not the actual position (the player has to figure that one out him/herself, unless maybe it's a beginner's instruction book-in which case it would not be an Uretxt), I would just use Fingersatz (fingering) and basically ignore Applikatur unless the music in question is actually for string instruments.

Eine Applikatur (Fingersatz) die auch für kleinere Hände einfach zu
handhaben ist.

Der Fingersatz (engl. fingerring) wird auch als Applikatur bezeichnet.

Wenngleich Beethoven also mitunter die »falsche Applikatur« (d. h. einen unpassenden und damit weniger schön klingenden Fingersatz) wählte, so scheint er von seinen Violinsonaten vollkommen überzeugt gewesen zu sein

Thanks very much! I made "Fingersätze und Applikaturen" "fingerings and positions", although really with the idea explained by Heike that Applikatur here means fingering. I considered just making it "fingerings", but I figured it needed the phrase for the rhythm of the sentence. Which is perhaps what "Applikatur" is there for.

Note for the glossary: in a basso continuo or jazz context Applikatur might be well translated as "voicing". But that isn´t relevant to these Urtext editions.
