Context is a survey conducted to establish training needs for a software application:

"2.3 Aufbereitung und Analyse der Daten

Qualitativ gesehen waren alle n=249 Fälle verwendbar, widersprüchliche und stereotype Antwortmuster (z.B. durchgehende Zustimmung) kommen nicht vor. Bei zwei Datensätzen legten die Antwortenden Wert auf anonyme Datenerfassung, und statt Name und User wurden lediglich die Initialen angegeben. Die zwei Datensätze wurden dennoch als gültig gewertet.

Das 5%-getrimmte Mittel beträgt 13,9 Minuten und liegt damit über der angesetzten Bearbeitungszeit von 10 Minuten.

Rechtschreib- und Syntaxfehler wurden nicht korrigiert. Antworten, durch die auf einzelne Dozenten rückgeschlossen werden kann, wurden eliminiert."

Has anyone any ideas what could be meant by "5%-getrimmte Mittel"? Is the mean response time ADJUSTED by 5%? Or what would be the common turn of phrase in this field?

Reading your question again, I realize, that you also asked about the 5%. It would mean, that the ends (low and high) are truncated by 5%.

agree  Bernhard Sulzer: I was thinking "trimmed mean" and it gets more hits. But "truncated" is definitely used. / except, when I think of "truncated mean" I would think the mean itself is truncated. But I'm not a mathematician.
