Christopher Marvin works as the quality assurance manager for the electronic media division of the New York Times. As one of the originators of the Web\'s first online magazine, Chris has been involved with the Web almost from day one. Chris has worked in positions dealing with a variety of aspects of both Web and software development.

Monster.com: What exactly do you do as QA manager?
Christopher Marvin: I am laterally integrated into the group, so I work with all of the different groups in the software development process and Web development process. Basically, I work with whoever is going to be touching the product to make sure that their contribution is meaningful. I work primarily with the project managers, members of the product group and the developers.

I try to stress a good spec. If you write a great technical specification, it is directly portable into the test document, which is the QA person\'s number one tool for diagnosing problems.

If a project group comes up with a spec for the product, I will make sure the product fulfills both client and user expectations. I make sure that everything in the spec makes sense and that everything is doable. Essentially, I\'m the last stop in the development process.

I also help to track bugs. We have software that allow people to submit a bug. This is done either by users via customer service or internally. The bug gets tracked in what\'s called, appropriately, BugTrack. I get together with the product group and the project managers, and we diagnose and schedule a fix and make sure it gets done. If necessary we develop a special project -- an improvement project -- to fix several bugs.
