What a horrible word - there seem to be ten thousand possible translations and I'm stuck as to which one to use (btw, this is for a GmbH) - my instinct tells me to go for authorised officer ...

Thanks to everyone. I like this answer as it sounds nice and general and I feel that the German term is quite general too - I imagine there can be different kinds of "Prokuristen", so without knowing exactly what kind is referred to, I prefer to remain vague. Authorised signatory is what I found too, but it sounds to me as if this is just restricted to signing, which is not necessarily the case as this person may be given further powers.

is probably closest for a job not existing in America. He may speak for and sign legal documents on behalf of the company (Zeichnungsberechtigter). In Britain it would be a "director".
