explanation: settlements for the poor/poor townships

Explanation:
"Soweto is an urban area in the City of Johannesburg, in Gauteng, South Africa. Its name is an English abbreviation, short for South Western Townships."

In the end "slums" is what these places are but, in fact, they were specially established townships for the black population in the era of apartheid

"Siedlung" here is a"settlement" or "township"

agree  Lancashireman: More appropriate than 'slums' which generally refers to older properties that were originally built to good standard but have become run down.

shanty towns

Explanation:
"Shanty towns often materialise on the outskirts of South Africa’s cities over night: a single shack quickly multiplies to 10, until the once empty landscape is transformed into a sprawling network of corrugated iron dwellings for the poor.

While many of the inhabitants are migrants from across the continent, the results of a new survey compiled by a South African NGO suggest another source for the huge numbers of people living in the shanty towns."

Later we drove back into Soweto to actually visit the township center put down in the midst of one of the rawest shanty towns you’ll ever see, and talked to the Assistant Director,
