When the wall was still up

Explanation:
One of my research areas is DDR politics and East/West relations, the Ostzeiten normally refers to the time when East Germany still existed as an independent state. However, I cant think of a specific term we would use here, as the English tend to just use the wall as a reference point...

Open to suggestions here:)

when the GDR still existed, German partition

Explanation:
"In Ostzeiten" here refers to the time of the German partition, during the times of the GDR.

"It was very hard, especially when the GDR still existed" - something along those line.

agree  Armorel Young: I think you have to retain "of the wall", though (otherwise "before the fall" is a bit too like the theological concept of "before the Fall"!). Oh, and I'm not quite sure why this is US usage - just as good in BE.
2 hrs
-> Hi Armorel, I specify US usage just in case there's a BE term I'm not familiar with. And yes, we don't want to confuse the two 'Falls'!

agree  Adam Kiolle: I particularly like "before the fall of the wall" - captures the almost colloquial or at least informal nature of "in Ostzeiten" very well

Short enough?
