Explanation:
Ministerien werden immer mal wieder umbenannt. Je nach der gerade amtierenden Koalitionsregierung und den gewünschten Schwerpunktbildungen und/oder Machtzuwachs im jeweiligen Ressort.
Die genannte Quelle gibt in etwa auch das wieder, was ich in Erinnerung hatte: Es war bis etwa 1998 (erste Schröder-Regierung) Bundesministerium für Verkehr. Dann Verkehr, Bau und Wohnungswesen (sh. Quelle).
Was dort nicht geschrieben steht: Auch die Funktion "Aufbau Ost" wurde zeitweise im Ministeriumsnamen genannt.
Hoffe das hilft als Hintergrundinfo.

Thanks Andres, I had found those sites, but none of them have any hits for MfV. However, I phoned the BMVBS this morning and a very helpful man explained the the abbreviation does indeed refer to the Ministerium fuer Verkehr, which used to be separate from that for Bau and Stadtentwicklung. He wasn't able to give me an exact date for the change, but confirmed that this would have been the case in 1993. I have it on Ellen's authority that the changeover date was 1998 (see below).

This had crossed my mind, but there is a reference later on to direct questions to the (national) KBA, rather than a local branch. I'm welcome to consider any evidence, though.

Thanks. This seems likely. It ties in with the dates and explains the use of BMV later on. I'm going to have to find some definite online proof before I enter this into the glossary, though. All the google hits that I've found for " 'MfV' 'Ministerium fuer Verkehrswesen'" so far have been links to the GDR institution of the same name and abbreviation.

I'm beginning to wonder whether it is that after all. With the date 1993, it might be unlikely. It's not Ministerium für Volksbildung, anyway!

Asker: Yes, that's the document I am translating. Unfortunately, the second instance of "MfV" is in exactly the same context as the first instance, so I'm none the wiser. Thanks for your efforts, anyway.

Asker: Sorry, just realised what you were getting at there. Saw it on my Blackberry and it didn't click. They refer to it as both "MfW" and "MfV". Thank you, Phil.
