Aber jeder wusste, dass es zumeist die Zweitstimmen waren derer, die die CDU gewählt hatten, die diese aber „austarieren“ wollten durch die Liberalen

Ich kenne den Ausdruck nicht und finde ihn auch in keinem Wörterbuch. Es muss ein Wortspiel sein. Hat das was mit Star - wie Popstar :-)- und... zu tun? Ach ich weiß es einfach nicht. Kann mir jemand helfen?

Das Wort kommt nicht etwa von "Star", sondern hat vielmehr mit Gewichten (Brutto, Netto, Tara [Verpackungsgewicht]) zu tun.

Laut Wahrig: "austarieren: Ware austraieren: Das Gewicht der Verpackung einer Ware beim Wiegen ausgleichen, so dass von der Waage nur das Gewicht des Inhalts angezeigt wird."

I wouldn't worry too much about content/packaging though. Here it simply means "to counterbalance (or balance out) a (not too big) difference.

Verwirrende Zuordnung - Engl-> Dt. kann es ja wohl nicht sein?
Duden: austarieren = ins Gleichgewicht bringen (Für meine Begriffe ein durchaus üblicher Ausdruck).
Engl. to balance or to create a balance between CDU/FDP (the CDU is not meant to become too strong).
