German term or phrase: einem großen Anderen
"Sie schiebt Bush und seinen Sieg einem homogenen, kulturell fremden Lager zu, *einem großen Anderen*, das zu verstehen man sich nicht zu bemühen braucht."
Context is European view of Bush reelection. Am not sure to what the author is referring here.
Thanks in advance.

disagree  Robert Sleigh: Hi Johnathon. Up Manchester way we call it a "grand Autre" though I prefer the expression the "Great Unwashed" myself!

-> Why are you disagreeing? The term in the US is "Other", not Autre (that's British) and why not just offer it as a suggestion!

agree  John Fenz: The "Other", a fashionable term in academic circles for precisely this. If I may suggest,:..."the Other", a mass one needn't bother to understand".

agree  John Fenz: though one might leave it at "a great, unknown" (w/out "force"). I have the phrase "the Great Unknown" in mind.
