Geestsporn (landmark in the landscape) Explanation: I would leave it like that with an explanation: http://willol.eparadise.de/wiki/Stade Geographical situation Stade is because of the river Rocker between that Old country and Kehdingen , nearby that Unterelbe . The surrounding landscape is predominantly flat March country . The city lies on into this landscape a projecting Geestsporn , which rises up to 14 meters (mirror mountain, location of the former castle) over the march. In particular, a Geest: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geest Der Begriff Geest (Substantivierung des niederdeutschen Adjektivs gest, trocken, unfruchtbar, oder güst, unfruchtbar bei milchgebenden Tieren) bezeichnet einen Landschaftstyp in Norddeutschland, der durch Ablagerungen während der Eiszeiten entstanden ist und im Gegensatz zur Marsch steht. |

spur of sandy coastal moorland Explanation: I doubt that anybody would know Geest in English, never mind Geestsporn, so there's no point leaving it as-is. I'm not sure that sandy plateau spur does the job. But this is a very tentative suggestion. |
