German term or phrase: Anknüpfungspunkt
From an interview about children's films:

Viele Jugendliche in westlichen Gesellschaften haben keine existentiellen Sorgen, ihre Probleme sind durch eine emotionale Armut bedingt – was nicht weniger schlimm ist. Häufig fehlen Traditionen und *soziale wie gesellschaftliche Anknüpfungspunkte für das eigene Lebenskonzept*.

The best I've been able to come up with so far is: "...social as well as societal starting points for their own philosophy of life" which is obviously horrible. I was also thinking of "social models" but that is rather a stretch from the original. Grateful for your ideas.

point of reference
Explanation:
In addition, children around the ages of 10-14 often develop a specific friendship (called a "chum" in the literature), which provides for them a reflective social point of reference for their development into adulthood.

social networks

Explanation:
A network is a good place to "anknüpfen".

"They often lack traditions along with social and societal networks for developing their own approach to life."

On second thought, make that a CL3. Networks may be stretching it from the original as well, like your "social models", which is actually a very good suggestion, mill.

In any case, the idea here is that today's young people in Western societies live a fairly isolated existence (aside from their broadband access to the Internet) and lack the social "points of reference" needed to develop their own approach to life.

Hey, how about social points of reference?

connecting point

Explanation:
I understand it as points/opportunities/links for connecting their own life /life concept - in a more practical, actually-do-it kind of way.

or:
...opportunities to connect/for connecting their own life concept
link(s)
point(s) of connection
connectors

clarification on link(s):
I would phrase this: with no social etc.or societal links for their own concept of life
can't link their own concept of life to social environment or society (in general)

It might be a little too informal but sometimes the " common bonds" are lacking in the relationship.
