German term or phrase: akademischer Lehrer
Context:
ihre Tätigkeit als akademische Lehrerin

I'm thinkign along the lines of "her teaching work in academia", although I suspect it could also mean "her work as a lecturer". This is reference to her teaching work, alongside research, etc.

lecturer ( your answer)
Explanation:
In the absence of more context, I would simply say "lecturer" because it is ambigous enough not to get you in trouble :)

If you add "university" you must be sure that she indeed teaches in Univ.; if you add "tutor",beware because this is a very low post in the university setting ( US).

academic teacher/university-trained teacher/teaching work in academia

Explanation:
akademischer Lehrer [Bildung] - teaching work in academia;
A teacher in England does not necessarily have to have a university degree to teach, so I assume it would mean an academic teacher or a university-trained teacher;

Asker: My customer wants British English rather than American, so I tend to stick to british terminology too, where possible.

agree  Helen Shiner: I think academic teacher would be just fine. For me it would indicate someone working in a university, though, rather than in a school.
