agree  Richard Benham: Yes to "final". That's where the "abschließend" comes into it. Some kind of final project or dissertation seems pretty well compulsory for degrees in the German-speaking countries.

capstone project


Explanation:
I'd use final project for a term or year, but the German custom of having a cumulative exam at the end would be better conveyed by using the capstone concept; this is at least familiar to Americans (as the 'crowning' event of a course of studies, rather than just a term)
