German term or phrase: über der Eingabemaske
Context:

Wenn ..., erhalten Sie eine entsprechende Meldung über der Eingabemaske.

I'm not too sure about how to interpret this. Earlier on in the same document it twice said:

Eine entsprechende Meldung wird oberhalb der Eingabemaske angezeigt, which I took to mean that "A connection status message is displayed above the input dialog", but "über der Eingabemaske" seems to suggest an alert/message prompt that pops up to display the error message (in this instance).

input mask
Explanation:
An Eingabemaske is basically an electronic form on which information is requested and fields "filled in" by the user.

to d_williams: I would definitely say vertically above, though this too is vague. It could indeed be a pop-up window.

Can't you just say: "The relevant message appears above the input mask"?

Notes to answerer
Asker: The question is, does oberhalb/über mean vertically above (higher up on the screen) or in a popup (overlapping the input dialog)?

agree  Melanie Nassar: Oberhalb I agree would be literally vertically above, but wouldn't over have the same degree of ambiguity as über?

-> I'm not sure. To me, "over" would *tend* to indicate that it's a pop-up. But then knowing how sloppily some computer people write, our "über" could mean anything!
