Hi folks.
I realize that this is two terms, but I have it in a heading in a text about corporate computer security. I thought they both fell under "authentication" in English. Here is some of the text:

Mit seiner Authentisierung weist ein Benutzer nach, dass seine dem System gegenüber angegebene Identität (z.B. Benutzer-ID) korrekt ist, d.h. dass er tatsächlich diese Identität besitzt.
Authentisierungsverfahren beruhen auf verschiedenen Grundlagen. Beispiele sind:
• Wissen, z.B. Passwort
• Besitz, z.B. Chipkarte, Token
• biometrische Authentisierung, z.B. Fingerabdruck
Häufig werden einige dieser Verfahren kombiniert, um eine zusätzliche Sicherheit zu gewährleisten, z.B. Wissen und Besitz (Chipkarte mit PIN).

In the section, I was not able to find Authentifizierung but it does come up later as:

Der administrative Zugang muss mit sicheren Authentifizierungsmethoden (falls verfügbar) und nicht mit Plaintext-Authentifizierungsmethoden wie Telnet, ftp, oder tftp ausgeführt werden.
Zulässige Authentifizierungsmethoden leiten das Passwort zumindest in verschlüsselter Form zur Authentifizierung an das zu administrierende IuK-System weiter.

(IuK = Information- und Kommunikations)

Now these still sound like 'authentication' to me.

Can anybody set me straight?
