From instructions on the use of an alignment gauge (track gauge). Could this be another way of saying "front wheel drive"?

Warum darf man "Vorderradantrieb" oder "Frontantrieb" nicht mit "angetriebener Vorderachse" gleichsetzen?
Weil es sich im ersten Fall um ein System (Antriebssystem) handelt, im zweiten Fall aber um ein (bewegtes) Teil.

Natürlich hätte der Satz auch lauten können: "Bei Fahrzeugen mit **Vorderradantrieb** (frontgetriebenen Fahrzeugen) ist eine Kontrolle der Vorspur mit handelsüblichen Spurmessgeräten nicht möglich.", aber der Satz lautet anders. Und unterschiedliche Begriffe erfordern auch eine entsprechende Nuancierung in der Übersetzung.

agree  Lancashireman: "when in doubt"? Why should there be any doubt about the need for a hyphen here? The hyphen serves to show the relationship between the three nouns, i.e. neither 'front drive' nor 'wheel drive' (and certainly not 'wheel-drive') but 'front-wheel drive'.
