The second paragraph explains the concept.

I can't find convincing references for "Intermediate compression", and even if this were the case, what about "intermediately compress" for the verb form!? Ugh.

intermediate compression
Explanation:
Despite your reservations, 'intermediate compression' does seem to be the term you are looking for. One of the references pertains to a Chevy model customized by the Univ. of Wisconson.
The verb form is a problem though. Perhaps you can reformulate to simply use 'compress' as the verb with some type of adverb or adverbial phrase to indicate 'intermediate'

OK, here are some references which pertain specifically to valve overlap:

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks for the suggestion Richard, but while this *may* be the correct term, the links you provide are not using "intermediate compression" in the same context at all. I'm looking for a term decribing the compression of residual exhaust gas retained in the cylinder before the end of the exhaust stroke, said gas then being compressed a bit prior to the piston descending again for the intake stroke.

Asker: Thanks for your update Richard. I have also found such references, but they all seem to be translations of German patents, hence my reticence in believing that this is also the correct English term to use in this context... I'd be a lot happier with references to documents originally authored in English that use this term.
