Durch eine beispielsweise zweistufige Bereichsgruppe mit einem in etwa um einen mittleren Übersetzungssprung zwischen zwei aufeinander fol­genden Übersetzungsstufen des Hauptgetriebes über dem gesamten Überset­zungssprung des Hauptgetriebes liegenden Übersetzungssprung wird die Spreizung des Gruppengetriebes in etwa verdoppelt und die Anzahl der insge­samt zur Verfügung stehenden Gänge nochmals verdoppelt.

It's like the gears on a bicycle where you have a number (mostly two) gears at the front (where the pedals are) and some other number of gears (three, five, seven ...) at the back (at the wheel).
With two gear rings at the front you double total number of gears and with an appropriate gear ration you may also double the total gear ratio.
