Funktion Zündung Zylinder 1
Funktionsbeschreibung

Thanks for your help. I decided to do a quick Google hit check and found trigger wins out, without actually delving deeper into this issue myself. Thanks for the discussion and your efforts, Johannes Gleim.

agree  Richard Stephen: See also:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thyristor where they speak of 'gate trigger voltage' and 'gate trigger current'

agree  Bernd Runge: Eigentlich geht es um ansteuern, womit trigger meine Zustimmung findet. Manchmal wird sogar von "driving a thyristor" gesprochen.

agree  Lancashireman: The comment below ("triggering implies regular repetitions") may be discounted.

agree  Kim Metzger: Trigger – to initiate. To trigger the capacitor's discharge http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitor_discharge_ignition

disagree  Johannes Gleim: Please do not trigger. This term is used in electronics for clocking an device like processors, and not to discharge capacitors. Triggering thyristors is also used for inverters, where direct current is converted into alternating current.

activate

Explanation:
I prefer activate to trigger as triggering implies regular repetitions instead of discharging a capacitor at once.

(impossible to copy partly)

It explains that EFI consist of three functions, Fuel Delivery System, Air Induction System, and Electronic Control System (ECU).

No sparking system is provided basically, but can be added as done by Toyota.

Other synomyms are "tripping", releasing" and "exciting".

Why not choose "trigger(ing)"?

The IEC definition is

EN internal triggering
triggering obtained when the signal which controls the time base is supplied by an internal circuit acted upon by the observed quantity
DE interne Triggerung
http://www.electropedia.org/iev/iev.nsf/display?openform&iev...
(My comment: this implies reptitions and the German equivalent is "Triggern" instead of "antakten")

But what is "antakten"? The core word is "Takt"

DE Takt
EN clock
equipment that provides a cyclic timing signal
NOTE – Where replicated sources are used for reliability reasons, the assembly of these is regarded as a single clock.
http://www.electropedia.org/iev/iev.nsf/display?openform&iev...

How is it used?

For starting the clock pulses of a power converter having three or more phases (SR) with phase-sequenced quenching,
:
1. Verfahren zum Antakten eines drei- oder mehrphasigen Stromrichters in Br·ucken- oder Mittelpunktschaltung mit Phasenfolgel·oschung,
http://www.freepatentsonline.com/EP0031118.html

(My comment: still regular repetitions, but the asker's context speaks of decharging the capacitor at once, what normally is non-recurring, That's why I does not support either "to trigger" or "to clock". Instead of that, an "activation" is not linked to repetitons.)

disagree  Lancashireman: Based on a false premise: "...as triggering implies regular repetitions..."

-> /discharging/ a capacitor is normally an non-recurring incidence. Therefore "to trigger" should be avoided. You may trust in an electrical engineer like me.
