chunks of earth Explanation: It was the first thing that came to mind. Then I found a reference in a patent for an excavating apparatus (see below). Example sentence(s):

Erdblock clod of earth Explanation: A total of 1,345 items have been examined by experts, although the list includes 56 clods of earth which have been X-rayed and are known to contain further metal artefacts. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/staffordshire/8272058.stm The tractor's huge blade was lifted high up and then brought down with great force, shattering the ancient floors on Temple Mount. The large clods of earth exposed by the work were cast aside by the mustachioed driver. Yet even an amateur archeologist could spot the priceless remnants of Jewish, Christian and Muslim history being cast away. http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4194585,00.html If you cut the section, you found you had clods of earth with bone surrounded by finer sediment. You’ve got to have a look at what’s in your sediment and how it’s packaged. http://www.nma.gov.au/history/research/research_centre/our_p... Digging, or breaking up the clods of earth has to be done carefully so that any items, some of which can be very fragile, are not missed. http://www.localrags.co.uk/index.php/News/2010/10/22/a-volun... |

soil blocks Explanation: "A small quantity of pottery was also discovered and dated to the Early or Middle Iron Age (800-100 BC), further confirming the dating suggested by metal analysis. To ensure the objects were disturbed as little as possible, the cauldrons were lifted complete in soil blocks by British Museum conservators." see also: http://tiny.cc/93or4w http://tiny.cc/p6or4w Reference: http://www.britishmuseum.org/research/research_projects/all_... |

lump of earth Explanation: I'd offer "huge lumps of earth" for "ganze Erdblöcke". Lots of these options could work; I just like "huge lumps" in this context. |
